Here at Cullerne, January has been a bitterly cold month with a foot of snow covering the gardens. There are no flowers at the moment but we are all looking forward to the emergence of snowdrop. Marion is working away on her new book which we are planning on publishing in April. Here is a brief view of her write-up on this essence.

*** Essence of the Month ***
Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis)

The snowdrop is regarded as the first flower of spring, symbolising purity and the cleansing of the earth after winter. Galantamine, originally extracted from wild snowdrops, has been used throughout Eastern Europe for the alleviation of neuromuscular ailments, such as neuritis and neuralgia. Recent trials show that galantamine may not only slow the decline into the black night of Alzheimer’s disease but also reverse it. Snowdrop is like a light that shines in the dark. It is essence illuminates the power of surrender in adapting to life changes and transitions, to accept things as they are and to let go. The essence of Snowdrop allows us to access deep inner stillness and to surrender to the processes whereby we can release the past.

Seasonal Affections

During winter, especially here in the Northern hemisphere, it gets dark and gloomy early in the day and it is quite easy to feel down, depressed or melancholic. Seasonal Affections helps to release emotional congestion and to tap inner reserves of strength. The key essences in this combination are Elder - helps to stimulate the body’s natural power of renewal, Gorse - strengthens the immune defenses, raises vitality and life force and Snowdrop - helps you to find peace.

Light therapy is often recommended if you are suffereing from SAD syndrome (Seasonal Affection Disorder) and here the sufferer is placed in a room with a very bright light for a period of time. It has been suggested that the increased light raises the serotonin level in the brain and so we feel more optimistic. Exercise is also another good remedy. It helps to stimulate our body, serotonin levels and the fitter we are the better we feel. If your symptoms do not go away, it is always good to consult your doctor.

*** Question of the Month ***
Can I give flower essences to animals?

flower-essence-cat

Yes, flower essences work just as well with animals and sometimes even better. Like humans, animals also suffer from emotional and behavioural issues. Anger, fear, and insecurity are common problems in domestic animals. This is what Hilda Rogers from The Natural Approach has to say; “Many animals respond very well to flower essences. Horses and dogs, in particular, seem to have an affinity with these remedies. The Combination Essences are simple to use and can be given to a horse on a small piece of apple or carrot, and to a dog by just pulling out the lower lip and dripping the required number of drops onto the gums.

FIRST AID
is very good for helping a dog to cope with a visit to the vet or other stressful situations. It can also be given before and after an operation.

PSYCHIC PROTECTION
can be used for dogs that get show fright, become worried at training classes, or, feel overwhelmed by a situation or place.

LIFE FORCE
often aids the recuperative process and can help horses who have ‘lost form’ and are suffering a bit of ‘burn out’.

SEASONAL AFFECTIONS
can be effective in helping a horse to overcome seasonal allergies.

is a very useful thing to have in the veterinary first aid box. It can be used to help deal with general over-excitability or in anticipation of a situation arising which has caused panic or distress before.

*** Monthly News ***

We hope to release our German, Spanish and Greek brochures in the next month or so. We are also working on a Swedish one with our trade clients. We will have a new gift box soon and it is our intention to sell the Element and Gem essences as full sets.

*** Monthly Poem ***

In all places, then, and in all seasons,
Flowers expand their light and soul-like wings,
Teaching us, by most persuasive reasons,
How akin they are to human things.
And with childlike, credulous affection
We behold their tender buds expand;
Emblems of our own great resurrection,
Emblems of the bright and better land.

By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Making the best out of what is right here and now

Making the best out of what is right here and now is one of the great secrets to a happy life. In this winter period our feelings about snow, and cold may vary and yet we may have similar trials and challenges. Winter is a time to slow down, reflect, curl up in a blanket, have a hot bubble bath with flower remedies, be with friends and cook delicious and steaming hot meals. Sometimes, when our lives are busy, the winter rhythm and our reality are in conflict which creates challenges.

We can just fall into a hole and struggle to find our way out. I’ve been wondering how to best apply the recipe of ‘making the best out of what is’ right to this phenomena. Maybe it means opening the gates to a bit more flexibility, openness and surrender? Maybe its time to be creative in a different way. What are your specific needs and how can you meet them? I’m sure you have a lot of ideas to put into action and enjoy with others. Have a look at our remedy of the months as well. Whatever you do, ENJOY!

The Natural Approach

hilda-ross-rodger

In 1998, to celebrate not dying from a serious illness, Hilda Ross Rodger founded The Natural Approach. She has tried to incorporate all of her life’s experiences into this business – teaching, communicating, training - and also building up an excellent range of products which she knows inside out! To begin with, Hilda focussed on horses ... but horses have humans attached and humans tend to have pets! So the business expanded to incorporate quality products for people, pets and horses. For many years Hilda took her trade stand to major equestrian events throughout Scotland and the North of England. But these days, in addition to her small nucleus of local customers, she concentrates on her mail order business.
