Seasonal Affective Disorder

Winter Blues

Seasonal Affective Disorder or S.A.D. syndrome affects approximately half a million people in the U.K. During the winter months levels of melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal gland which regulates our body clocks, can be disrupted and is thought to be a factor in S.A.D. This can lead to mood swings, lethargy and a variety of other symptoms ranging from mild ‘winter blues’ to a seriously debilitating illness.

Sufferers may oversleep, feel fatigued, crave carbohydrates and sweet foods, become irritable, avoid social contact and feel hopeless, and most show signs of a weakened immune system.

The combination essences featured, three of which include Gorse, will all help during this season.

Gorse essence is a bringer of light and joy, qualities that stimulate the immune system and promote a sense of wellbeing and regeneration. By taking this essence, life force is enhanced, which can help to avoid the ’winter blues’.

Wintergreen is another wonderful essence for this time of year, because it brings optimism and gladness, lighting up the dark days by giving us hope and expectancy for the future. This essence is to be found in Light Being.

Snowdrop is also an appropriate essence at this time. Found in Light Being, Karma Clear and Seasonal Affections, this flower symbolises moving from darkness to light.

It supports us to release and let go of the past and what is passing, bringing serenity and peace through acceptance and adaptability to life changes and transitions.
